EL CAJON - Sheriff's deputies call it a miracle that no one was injured after a carjacking suspect reached speeds over 100 miles an hour in a wild chase through the East County Friday evening. That suspect, described as a white male in his mid-thirties, continued to elude capture even after a spike strip blew out two of the stolen car's tires. Authorities pursued the Nissan 350Z convertible from Rancho San Diego, through Poway and Lakeside, into El Cajon. According to sheriff's deputies, the suspect approached the car's owner shortly before 6pm at the intersection of Vista Grande Road and Calle Cantora, asked for money for gas, then attacked the driver. "The suspect actually crawled up on the back of the open convertible and choked the driver out," said Sgt. Elizabeth Palmer of the San Diego Sheriff's Dept. Much of the hour-long pursuit that ensued took place on southbound State Route 67, at times reaching speeds of 110 miles per hour. California Highway Patrol officers tried using spike strips at two separate locations to try to slow the suspect down. "One of the strips was actually able to slow the vehicle down to a point where two tires were damaged," Sgt. Palmer added, "but the vehicle kept going southbound on 67." Eventually, the suspect exited to Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon, still refusing to surrender and careening through commuter traffic. Finally, officers used a pit maneuver, causing the convertible to spin out of control, coming to a stop at Westfield Parkway Shopping Center. According to sheriff's deputies, the suspect was not armed and no weapon was recovered in the convertible. He is expected to face counts of carjacking, assault and reckless driving, among other possible charges. Meanwhile, the carjacking victim, who had allegedly been choked by the suspect, suffered cuts and scratches but did not need to be hospitalized.
