Just as there is the need for a PHD in the subject you study in college, there also in the need for some one who has travelled the path of realization. One of the qualifications of this person is that they thought that they could do it on their own. It is when they understood the necessity of finding someone who had travelled the path before, is when they come to the understanding that they need help. The struggle is with the inner demons of the mind, not with anything outside. This internal struggle must be fought with knowledge and love. It is extremely difficult to find some one who has overcome the mind with knowledge and love. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are compared to the manual for fixing the boat ( your body and mind) for traveling across the sea of samsara. Samadhi and the powers (siddhi's) are put in context.
